Simply put, breast milk storage and freezing is quite safe. There are a few precautions one needs to take before placing the container in the freezer, but overall it's a safe procedure. Breast milk, on the average, will only last 2 days in a normal refrigerator but will stay up to 3 months in a freezer and up to 6 months in a deep freeze.

Label the container with the babies name and the date it was frozen. Insure that there are no leaks in the container before placing it in the freezer by tipping it over the sink and checking for drips. Once in the freezer, be sure and use the oldest milk first, just like rotating stock at the grocery store.

Most of the containers on the market today have an area for labeling and zip lock closures for ease of access. Freezer burn is a concern for this type of storage. If the milk gets freezer burned, it's no good to give to the baby, so make sure the container is sealed tight.

A concern for some parents is that if they send the baby to day care, will they be receiving the proper milk. Labeling the containers in this fashion allows for no confusion on the part of the day care worker. Odds are no harm would happen, but why take chances? This is your baby, not someone else's.

Labeling and dating also insures that the milk is used on time. Thawing it out just to find it has gone bad can be a chore, especially if you have to do it a few times until a good one is found. Safety first when it comes to your baby. Hopefully following these guidelines will assist you in reaching that end.

This is a little more challenging, but can be a very good choice for someone with a tight budget.
